What have Y1/2 been up to?
Week 7
This week, we have thoroughly enjoyed our first Enrichment Week of the year, taking part in a range of activities to celebrate Diversity Week. Our focus has been on disabilities and inclusion, and we began the week by learning about different disabilities and how we can support and understand one another. The children took part in an obstacle course while wearing blindfolds or special glasses that impaired their vision. Working with a partner, they relied on clear communication and teamwork to guide one another safely through the course. It was wonderful to see the children demonstrating such excellent cooperation, kindness and communication skills throughout the activity. We were also delighted to welcome a very special visitor, Rowan, an assistant dog puppy in training to become a guide dog. The children loved meeting Rowan, asking thoughtful questions and learning more about the important role guide dogs play. They were incredibly respectful and responsible during the visit. Later in the week, we had another special guest who introduced us to Makaton. The children learnt how to sign their names and enjoyed finding out more about both Makaton and British Sign Language.
Alongside our enrichment activities, we have started our new history topic, The Great Fire of London. We have explored what London was like in 1666 and compared it to the city we know today. The children were fascinated by the different jobs people had during that time and enjoyed discussing which occupations they would have liked to do. Unsurprisingly, being a gong farmer was not a popular choice!
In Maths, Year 2 have been learning to tell the time to quarter past and quarter to the hour. In English, the children have been exploring our new class text, Little Red, and have been learning exciting new vocabulary to describe characters and settings.
Next week is our final week before half term, and we are looking forward to sharing our home learning projects in class. If your child has completed a project, please remember to send it in before Wednesday so that we can celebrate all of their hard work together. We can't wait to see them!
Week 6
What a wonderful week it has been in all 3 classes! We began the week with our Grandparents’ Tea Party, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. A huge thank you to all the grandparents who joined us and spent time in the classrooms taking part in activities with the children. It was a pleasure to welcome so many special visitors into school, and the children loved sharing their learning with you. Throughout the week, the children have continued to enjoy their DT provision, creating sock puppets, practising their threading and weaving skills, and performing imaginative puppet shows. During our DT day, the children carefully followed their designs to make hand puppets, demonstrating fantastic perseverance and resilience while sewing and working collaboratively to share materials and decorations. We are incredibly proud of their finished puppets, which look amazing!
In Maths, Year 2 have been learning all about money, including recognising coins and notes and counting different amounts, while Year 1 have been developing their understanding of numbers to 20 using a range of practical resources and representations. In English, the Year 2 children have truly impressed us with their retelling of The Magic Paintbrush, using expanded noun phrases and rich descriptions to bring their writing to life. Meanwhile, Year 1 have been exploring The Little Shoemaker in Drawing Club, practising their letter formation and applying capital letters and full stops in their writing. We are looking forward to another exciting week ahead as we travel back to 1666 and begin learning all about the Great Fire of London! 🔥🏛️
Week 5
We have had another fantastic week in class, filled with engaging learning opportunities and wonderful achievements. The children have worked incredibly hard and have shown great enthusiasm across all areas of the curriculum. In PE we have been continuing to build on our attacking and defending skills, learning to dodge and score points in a range of games. In English in Year 2, we have continued exploring The Magic Paintbrush, using the story to develop our writing skills. The children have been busy retelling key events, creating expanded noun phrases, and using ambitious vocabulary to bring their descriptions to life. We have been particularly impressed by their creativity and growing confidence as writers.
Across the curriculum, the children have demonstrated excellent teamwork, resilience, and curiosity. We have all enjoyed our new DT topic where we have been exploring puppets. The children have been very creative in our provision areas, creating their own puppet shows, making their own stick puppets and back drops, as well as acting out some of their favourite traditional tales! They have enjoyed sharing ideas, asking thoughtful questions, and challenging themselves to achieve their very best. We are extremely proud of the positive attitudes to learning shown throughout the week. The classes have shown fantastic examples of kindness, perseverance, and respect, making all 3 classrooms a happy and productive place to learn.
Week 4
This week, we have been continuing to investigate the properties of materials, exploring which materials are waterproof and which are not. The children worked scientifically by making predictions, carrying out tests, and using appropriate scientific vocabulary to evaluate their findings. As part of our learning, we also designed and built bridges using a range of materials before testing their strength with toy cars. The children thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and demonstrated excellent reasoning skills throughout the investigation. In Maths, both Year 1 and Year 2 have taken part in practical, hands-on activities to develop their understanding. Year 2 have been adding and subtracting ones and tens. The children have shown great enthusiasm for their learning, asking thoughtful questions and challenging themselves to achieve their very best. We ended the week with a fantastic immersive experience as we welcomed Samuel Pepys into school! During our Great Fire of London workshop, the children explored historical artefacts, created artwork, practised writing with quills and ink, and enjoyed dressing up in period costumes. It was wonderful to see the children's curiosity and excitement as they stepped back in time and brought their historical learning to life. Throughout the workshop, the children were respectful, responsible, and enthusiastic, demonstrating our school values brilliantly. We are incredibly proud of all their hard work, positive attitudes, and excellent behaviour this week. Well done, everyone!
Week 3
This week, the children have been busy exploring the properties of different materials during our science lessons. Through hands-on investigations, they examined a variety of everyday objects and discussed whether materials were hard or soft, rough or smooth, flexible or rigid, and waterproof or absorbent. The children enjoyed making predictions, carrying out simple tests, and sharing their observations using scientific vocabulary. We were impressed by their curiosity and enthusiasm as they discovered how the properties of materials make them suitable for different purposes. Well done, everyone, for your fantastic scientific thinking!
Week 2
We have had another fabulous week in Year 1/2. It has been brilliant seeing the children settle into our daily routines and complete their first full week back at school. We had lots of fun during our first PE lesson on Monday. We learnt about attacking and defending within team sports. Then, we played some games to encourage us to use space when passing a ball. During our first Jigsaw lesson, we met 'Jigsaw Jo' who will be with us for all of our PSHE lessons this year. Jigsaw Jo talked to us about some of the worries she had about joining a new class. We came up with strategies to help Jo manage her worries and discussed who she could go to for help and support.
Week 1
Welcome back to school! :)
We hope you have had a fabulous summer and are ready to get back into the routine of school. We have been very excited to welcome the Year 1s and Year 2s back this week and it has been a great few days! We have spent some time getting to know each other, explored the provision areas and had lots of fun in our music lessons where we have been thinking about what animals a piece of music reminds us of. We have been practicing our call and response with the teacher using clapping, words, sounds and instruments. In Year 2 the children have been introduced to their new text for writing, 'The Day the Crayons Quit' where we have been looking at how the crayons were feeling, why they felt this way and we have written some super sentences them! In maths we have been learning all about place value of 2-digit numbers, using the equipment to practically partition the tens and the ones. It's been so lovely to see so many smiling faces this week and we can't wait to see everyone again on Monday! We will be teaching PE on Monday so please make sure you send your child to school wearing their PE kit :)
